Production value is often seen as the hallmark of professional filmmaking. Be it shorts, feature length or advertising spots, it’s generally assumed that money equals production value. The Robert Rodriguez 10 Minute Film School series exposes this as a simple misconception.
This documentary short tracks the making of Robert Rodriguez’s El mariachi, and uses several scenes to demonstrate how high production value can be achieved on a shoestring budget. Rodriguez comments in the clip that El mariachi was shot for around seven grand (wow!). This highlights what remarkable results can be accomplished with creativity and a reduce, reuse, recycle attitude to filmmaking.
