‘Jagmeet Singh’s secret weapon: The way he talks’

NDP leader and federal candidate Jagmeet Singh has become a political juggernaut in the last few weeks. Between DMs with Rihanna, a strong finish in the debates, and viral response to AOC’s tweet about taxing the rich, Singh’s popularity is skyrocketing.

Maclean’s has a theory about what’s driving the upswing.  ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hacking happiness

We’re told we can’t buy happiness, but can we distill it down to a science? Dr. Laurie Santos started the Happiness Lab to find out. As an extension of her wildly popular “Psychology and the Good Life” course at Yale, Dr. Santos is now sharing her wisdom with the masses via podcast. Even if her evidence-based approach to the big H doesn’t change your life, it never hurts to pick up a bit of Yale education for free.

Her nascent show is becoming a staff favourite—listen up here. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Why Jagmeet’s viral TikTok post matters.

Look, we’re tired. Elxn43 is tiring.

The highs have been thrilling (4.7 million turned out at the advanced polls—the highest number in Canadian history!) But the lows have devastated Canadian politics in ways we’re only beginning to comprehend. Between blackface scandals, resume fudging, flipflopping on abortion, bitchy social media subtweet wars, the sanctioning of fucking garbage alt-right publications as official Canadian media, 👏 we 👏🏼 are 👏🏿 tired.

That’s why we’re taking small wins where we can get them. Jagmeet Singh’s viral TikTok post isn’t just a playful pitch to young voters—it signals a small but significant shift in Canadian politics.

Always behind their US counterparts, Canadian politicians have been slow to take up the mantle of silly, authentic social media as a part of campaigning. We’re applauding Singh for trading on the new political currency of authenticity and being ahead of the #cdnpoli curve.
